Trios of Beethoven and Brahms, and Reflections on the Written Word, January 23, 2011

A chamber music program of richly textured Romantic-era repertoire delighted a capacity audience at Gustin House on Sunday afternoon, January 23. Clarinetist Margaret Wilson, cellist Scott McKnight and pianist Gregory Schulte performed Beethoven’s Trio in B-flat major, Op. 11, and Brahms’ Trio in A-minor, Opus 114. Alice Kuipers, internationally-published author, read from her work and spoke about engaging in literature and writing as a way of understanding life. Currently the Writer in Residence at Saskatoon Public Library, Ms. Kuipers brought along her little son --Gustin House events’ youngest guest ever--who took in the afternoon under the attentive care of his father, Yann Martel!

Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung ~ One Piano, Four Hands! February 18, 2011

The Lyell Gustin Recital Series of 2011 opened with a performance by pianists Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung, on Friday, February 18, at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The recital was presented by Gustin House in collaboration with Prairie Debut, and featured works by Mozart and Brahms, Heather Schmidt, and Piazzolla. An enthusiastic audience appreciated the duo’s musical artistry and the remarkable balance and unity of their performance. This was the 20th recital in the series that began in May 2005 at the time of the inauguration of Gustin House.

Music of Franz Liszt and Watercolours by Dorothy Knowles, March 27, 2011

Audiences gathered at Gustin House in both the afternoon and the evening of Sunday, March 27, for programs featuring solo piano works along with landscape art. To mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Liszt, internationally-awarded pianist Thomas Yu returned to his home city from Calgary to perform the virtuosic music of Liszt, including “Venezia e Napoli” and the Sonata in b-minor, S. 178. Saskatoon painter Catherine Perehudoff Fowler spoke about travels with her mother, distinguished landscape artist Dorothy Knowles!

Vocal Recital: William Lewans, baritone, and Gregory Schulte, pianist, May 20, 2011

On Friday, May 20, 2011, baritone William Lewans and pianist Gregory Schulte gave a recital of wonderful vocal works not often heard in live performance in Saskatoon. Schumann’s great song cycle, Dichterliebe, was the centerpiece of the evening; arias by Wagner, and songs by Ravel, Vaughan Williams and others completed the program. An enthusiastic audience enjoyed and celebrated Saskatchewan’s talent: Mr. Lewans, now based in Toronto, was born and raised in Assiniboine; Gregory Schulte, who has performed internationally and is well known in Saskatoon and district, is a native of Marysburg.

Contrasts Trio in Recital, August 23, 2011

The Lyell Gustin Recital Series presented Contrasts Trio in concert on August 23 at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. The ensemble--violinist Eduard Minevich, clarinetist Pauline Minevich, and pianist David L. McIntyre—performed Bartok’s important work of 1938, “Contrasts Trio,” as well as more recent compositions by Glick, Zaninelli, and McIntyre; the contemporary spirit of the program reflected the period in which music has been composed for this specific instrumental grouping. Attendees greatly appreciated Dr. Pauline Minevich’s pre-concert talk.

Another wonderful aspect of the evening was the presence of Roy Morden, Gustin graduate and lifelong professional musician, who had flown in specially for the recital from his home in California. His nephew and former piano student, David McIntyre, had not known of Mr. Morden’s plan to attend—it was to him, and to all, a delightful surprise and an honour to have Mr. Morden present.

The Viola, the Music, the Maker. Sunday, September 25, 2011

The new season at Gustin House opened with a celebration of string instruments, notably the viola. James Legge, principal violist of the Saskatoon Symphony, and pianist Gregory Schulte performed works by J.S. Bach, Mikhail Glinka, Frank Bridge and William Keith Rogers. Mr. Legge played a viola created by Saskatoon luthier Darren Molnar, who was the day’s speaker-presenter. Mr. Molnar discussed aspects of the art of making string instruments, and showed tools, drawings, and violins in various stages of completion. A very full audience delighted in the music and the rare glimpse into the workshop of a luthier.!

Songs of Love and Loss, and Benjamin Britten in the 1930’s. November 13,2011

Dramatic German lieder opened the afternoon program at Gustin House on Sunday, November 13. Mezzo-soprano Lisa Hornung and pianist Jaya Hoy performed Johannes Brahms’ Zigeunerlieder (Gypsy Songs) and works by Joseph Marx. Dr. Walter Deller, musician and scholar, discussed Benjamin Britten’s life and career from 1936 to 1946, a time of great importance in the composer’s intellectual and musical formation. The program concluded with the performance of Purcell’s Three Divine Hymns for voice and piano, realized by Britten.
