Fifth Anniversary of Gustin House

Two special events marked the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of Gustin House in 2005 by the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan.

On June 13, 2010, an overflow audience at Gustin House heard flautist Ross Carstairs and pianist Gregory Schulte perform exquisite works from the French repertoire. Allan Duddridge, who led the restoration of Gustin House in 2005, spoke on the influence of architectural surroundings.

A summer recital of music for cello and piano took place at Grace-Westminster United Church on August 23, 2010. Cellist Laura Jones of Toronto and collaborative pianist Boyd McDonald of Kitchener performed sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms and works by Chopin and Schumann. Five years earlier, Mr. McDonald had opened the Lyell Gustin Recital Series with a solo piano concert; the August 23 recital fittingly recalled that first event.

Gustin House takes this opportunity to thank all performers and presenters of the seasons past and present for splendid programs of music and art, and for their wonderful collaboration and generosity. We also acknowledge with gratitude the Department of Canadian Heritage (the Canada Arts Presentation Fund) and the Saskatchewan Arts Board for support of our musical programs during this year and in seasons past.

New Season Opens at Gustin House

On the evening of October 3, Gustin House presented a program on the arts of the 19th century. The ideals of Romanticism  were richly expressed in the lieder of Schubert, Schumann and Brahms, performed by mezzo-soprano Lisa Hornung and pianist Jaya Hoy, both of North Battleford. Douglas Thorpe spoke on British and German literature of the era, notably the work of Sir Walter Scott.

Two Saskatoon-born Gustin musical descendants designed the November 21st program, “Science of the Spheres, Music of the Heavens.” Edmonton pianist Sylvia Shadick-Taylor performed intriguing Canadian works inspired by the skies and heavenly bodies; her brother, local astronomer Stan Shadick, commented on each piano composition as he discussed our evolving understanding of the stars, planets and nebulae. The program also marked the opening of Canada Music Week, November 21-28.

Remembering Irene Stevens

Gustin House was honoured to receive numerous items from the Estate of Irene Stevens, who had been Dr. Gustin’s housekeeper for over 25 years. Irene, fondly remembered by many Gustin students for her kindly and hospitable presence, died in 2006. Her niece, Helen Riggs, has given to Gustin House historic photos, recipes, the sewing machine that Irene used so expertly to make drapery for the Studios, and other household articles. Thank you to Helen Riggs and to Irene’s sister, Meta Doherty, for preserving and graciously donating these items.

Passings of Gustin Studio Graduates

Eleanor Anderson, teacher of school music and Suzuki violin, and church musician, died March 11, 2010 in Powell River, BC at age 99. She and her sister, the late Millicent Lusk, came of a pioneer Saskatoon family and both studied with Dr. Gustin in the very early period of the Gustin Studios.

Dora Bergen, a Gustin student in the 1940s and longtime music teacher, passed away in Saskatoon on March 22, 2010, at age 90. She served faithfully also as volunteer pianist in church and community.

Scholarship Winner

The Lyell Gustin Memorial Piano Competition, under the auspices of the Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association, was held May 28-29, 2010. Melissa Liu of Saskatoon won the first prize, given by the Gustin/Trounce Heritage Committee.
